majority leader harry reid warned his colleagues they might have to work into their scheduled summer vacation if they don't act before the weekend. so you can bet they will act before the weekend. but even as the program is helping folks in the market for a new car, it appears to be hurting certain charities. you have seen their ads in the newspaper, the ones asking for you to donate your old car. turns out cash for clunkers is a little bit more popular than a tax write-off for clunkers. adam housley is in sun valley, california, with more on that tonight. adam, how much are charities losing? >> shepard, in some cases, 30%, 40%. here at rightway charities in sun valley, a car like this might get $400 in an auction. it will auction off 20 or so cars like this a week. pretty good money going to the local boys and girls clubs and other charities in the area. now they are saying down 30% to 40%. their numbers are dropping significantly which means less money to some of these charities. shepard? shepard: i'm curious about what the specific difference is between cashing in your car and don

, harry reid last night, late, apparently reached a zeal. he's got enough votes. they have enough democrats to do anything they want to. but apparently did he reach a deal because some -- he did reach a deal because some republicans were threatening to not make this go through. some speedbumps along the way and perhaps they would have to start their vacation late. nonetheless, $2 billion more for the federal government to buy cars to do that to. peter: do we think that's the end? will there be another $2 billion? gretchen: that's the $2 billion question. peter: is it going to continue if it's successful in the terms of the goal of 750,000 cars being purchased? will there be another billion, another $2 billion, anothe another $3 billion? gretchen: a lot of economists wonder whether or not this is a good program. is it taking demand from buying cars in the next one, two, three years? after you hand out money, du, people are going to buy cars. if you hand out $4,500 to somebody, they're going do it. will they go back and ask $2 billion more? this takes them through labor day. apparen

right, rick. let's talk a little bit about cash for clunkers. harry reid after a lunch he had yesterday with the president of the united states who was trying to rally support for health care, harry reid came out and said, you know, we've got the votes, we've got 60 votes and we will probably add $2 billion more before the senators head out. a lot of people have been talking about whether or not this made good sense, gave up to $4,500 for these clunkers. now there is news -- i kind of mentioned this yesterday. caulking to one of my car -- talking to one of my car dealer friends. that four of the top five cars that people are buying are made by foreign automakers. gretchen: yeah. as i mentioned, friends are in the car business. look at this list. number one, ford focus, number two, toyota corp corolla, honda civic, toyota prius, toyota camry. so had this whole cash for clunkers -- sorry, i can't say it without laughing. has it benefited foreign automakers when the whole point many of these foreign manufactured cars are actually manufactured in the united states in many different states a
